Once upon a time, close to a hundreds years ago,
two gentlemen predicted that atoms could be frozen
to a standstill. Inside this still, chill cloud, they said,
even light would come to a halt. Photons frozen and
acting as an occult spear of light. A ghostly glow
hanging in midst of a crystal cloud..
In time, other wise men and women made this
prediction into reality. By 2009 they know how to
freeze light inside a Bose-Einstein condensat. From
300000km pr. second to zero movement, in no time.
What is constant these days, might I ask?
The trick is getting the atoms inside this condensat
to become very cold. Freezing them to almost
absolute low point of temperature. Colder than deep
space.
This involves shooting photons at each and every
one of the shaking, spinning and bouncing wild
atoms. Not only hitting them spot on, but also
hitting them with the right colour at the right
moment. Rainbow warriors in motion at subatomic
level, as I would say.
Mindspinning, this magic is.
Scientists these days also predict. Universe itself will
someday be no more. Every object an isolated, lone
entity, icy in eternal darkness. Frozen light. Or?
